Dell has delivered over 6,500 AI Factory deployments for customers spanning nearly all industry verticals. To mark this milestone, the company partnered with Omdia to conduct targeted research examining how enterprises secure AI workloads running on its infrastructure. The study’s core finding reveals that 98% of businesses are currently utilizing or building agentic AI for IT operations, shifting AI security from experimental pilot phases to formal production environments. The rest of the research highlights the substantial gap between rapid agentic AI adoption and lagging security protection measures.
Survey Data Reveals Governance and Risk Management Gaps
Omdia’s research shows 79% of organizations experienced at least one AI-related security incident over the past year, including agent-specific risks such as excessive operational autonomy, prompt injection attacks, and irregular tool invocation. Despite these prevalent threats, 95% of survey participants expressed confidence or high confidence in their capacity to mitigate AI-associated risks. This contradiction is clearly reflected in real-world operations: 24% of enterprises still rely on manual workflows to govern agentic AI permissions, even as intelligent agents operate at machine-scale speed.
Enterprise policy compliance presents a similar disconnect. While 93% of firms that allow public generative AI usage have established formal governance policies, 55% of security leaders report ongoing employee violations of these rules. AI security software purchasing authority remains fragmented across departments: CTOs lead 37% of procurement decisions, followed by general IT leadership at 26% and CISOs at 22%. Additionally, planned AI security investment growth over the next 12–18 months lacks clear prioritization, with no single investment category accounting for over 40% of total planned capital — AI threat detection tools sit right at this 40% threshold.
Infrastructure Isolation and Recovery Orchestration Status
In terms of deployment environments, nearly 40% of organizations run agentic AI workloads in on-premises data centers, and 43% leverage on-prem edge infrastructure. Only around one-third of enterprises isolate these AI workloads via sandboxing or air-gapping mechanisms. This heavy reliance on on-premises deployments makes the survey highly relevant to Dell, as these scenarios align closely with its 6,500 deployed AI Factory infrastructures.
On the resilience front, 87% of respondents regard threat detection and response tools as effective or highly effective for AI security, while 88% hold the same view for backup and recovery solutions supporting AI operational resilience. Dell emphasizes that threat detection alone is insufficient once AI agents or their core data are compromised. Comprehensive backup and recovery systems are critical to restoring AI applications, models and datasets to a verified secure state. The firm concludes that the success or stagnation of enterprise AI scaling hinges on whether security and resilience capabilities are embedded natively during initial deployment, rather than added as an afterthought.
